Bare Bones Dog & Pony Show
June 27th, 2009
Judging begins at 9am
Lucas Francis Studio
Dandridge, TN
Benefit for Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit
Bare Bones Dog & Pony Show is a NAMHSA Member Show. All first and second place horses in open classes for breed, collectability/workmanship, and performance will receive the appropriate NAN card. This card makes the model eligible for entry in the North American Nationals 2010 or 2011.
The dog show is a NEMDE qualifier! Dogs achieving first places will receive NEMDE point cards towards their championships.
Why a dog & pony show? There are many excellent dog sculptures collected by model horse hobbyists, and some are by our very own hobby artists. Why not showcase a sampling of both in one place, and enjoy the art?
Why bare bones? The intent is to show off your dogs with gusto, while trying for NAN cards for a few favorite show horses. The classlist for horses is “bare bones” to accommodate our hall size and time schedule.
Why June 27th? Well, not all of us are attending NAN in the Northwest that week. Besides, proxy entries are welcome, and everyone loves a one-day, fun qualifier show! This gives exhibitors all of Sunday to return home and feed their live critters.
Our show’s benefit charity is Mid-Atlantic Pug Rescue. This group has rescued record numbers of sick and abandoned Pugs, mixed breeds, and other purebreds each year. They really need our help, as donations were down by 95% in 2009. MAPR is run entirely by volunteers, so all funds go directly to medical expense of rescues, not to “admin”. Additional donations are welcome.
How do you plan to maximize the fundraiser proceeds, while keeping the entry fee within the “fun” range? Easy! This show has zero overhead. The rosettes and flats are all recycled satin from past model horse shows. We own the show hall (the studio), the tables, and the padded chairs. Parking is free. The trophies are donated by Lucas Francis Studio and various hobby studios. Every penny raised by this show goes to medical expenses for rescued dogs!
Awards:
Various sponsored class donations, see classlist.
Recycled satin rosettes and flats from past model horse shows. All classes will be placed to 5th with satin flats.
The Best In Show dog trophy is the “Invitation to Play” ceramic sculpture in antique gold glaze, on a base!

The Show Hall:
Lucas Francis Studio
500 Cline Road
Dandridge, TN 37725
Located east of Knoxville, with a good selection of nearby hotels, B&B, fast food, freeway, and an airport, it is easy to locate. This is a 1.5-story air-conditioned/heated show hall with bathroom, kitchenette, lounge, offices, and a separate ceramics workshop. Coffee, filtered water, and use of fridge and microwave are provided. The judges share the use of a separate room to keep their models while they work. The floors are tile and cement, not carpeted, so many showers prefer to wear comfortable shoes and lay models down on their tables with a margin left around the edge to prevent falls.
For your convenience, and considering recent air travel restrictions, we will allow showers to ship their models ahead to our show hall address. Folks who choose to do this are responsible for picking up their boxes, unpacking, repacking, and for return shipping. Check your tracking numbers before you leave for the show; show staff and LFS/Paul and Kristina Francis are not responsible for lost or damaged property.
Food: The show is not catered. You are welcome to bring your own sack lunch and use our kitchenette, or drive to the fast food options at the end of our street.
Fast food within 1-2 miles of studio, exit 417:
Subway
Hardees (Carl's Jr)
McDonald's
Taco Bell
Long John Silver's
Kentucky Fried Chicken
Wendy's
Sit down:
Ruby Tuesday
Perkins
Shoney's
Dandridge Seafood
Table space:
Each registered (non-proxy) shower will receive one full space measuring 3x6', 3'x8', or 2'x8'. Proxy entries do not include extra table space. We get a variety of table sizes from the rental house, which is why I can't guarantee which size space you will have at the show. Sorry, no additional tables available for extra fee. If you are only bringing half a space-ful of horses, please let me know so I can better budget spaces.
Hotel info:
The closest hotel is Jefferson Inn 865-940-5042, at the freeway exit to our street. This hotel is only 7 years old, everything is quite new.
Other older hotels at the exit:
Holiday Inn Express 865 397 1910 (will be more than $75 per night)
Comfort Inn 865 397 2090 ($80.96+ per night)
Super 8 865 397 1200 (Paul said this one offered a price under $50/night, but the rooms were NOT nice)
If you have hotel/air credit card miles or a favorite discount travel web site, you can find better deals.
Nearby stuff:
exit 407 Bass Pro (with Starbucks inside), aka Man Town, also a Cracker Barrel
exit 398 Various restaurants, Puleo's
lots of outlet shopping, restaurants, and seasonal attractions in Pigeon Forge
IMPORTANT: If you venture through Knoxville, the I-40 closure is supposed to open in June 2009. If the I-40 closure remains in effect by the 27th, use
the 640 bypass.
General Show Rules:
All models must be shown wearing a white tag on a leg, tag is either 1” or 2” long. Please write clearly or print a sticker on one side of the tag:
Horse or Dog name (see Dog Show Rules for specific tag differences)
Breed
Gender
Owner’s 3 initials + number ( XXX1, XXX2...)
This must be facing up when the horse is on the judging table. Judges do not want to risk damaging your piece just to flip a tag. Models without tags will not be judged.
Per class entry:
Because it is a small fun show, we ask that you bring only the very best of your collection. Limit 3 horse entries per exhibitor per equine breed class, 3 per performance class. Limit 5 dog entries per canine breed class, 3 per performance class.
Cross entry is allowed only in the following cases:
1. Performance and breed, as long as it does not conflict the show schedule.
No cross entry between puppy/foal and adult breed classes.
Proxy showing:
Proxy showers will be charged a proxy fee, but there is no table space included in the package.
Proxy 1-5 models (horses and dogs combined total)… $15
Proxy 6+ models… $25
Show staff will not show horses or dogs that were shipped to the show without a proxy exhibitor named or present.
Participant Conduct:
The model collecting community is a happy, friendly family with like concerns and passions. We humbly remind all to please treat others and their models with the respect you would like to receive. Do not touch other people’s property without their express consent and supervision. You are responsible for any damage you cause; the show hall, show holders, and city are not liable (you will sign a release upon registration). We do not allow public, non-participants, children who are not registered exhibitors, or pets in the show hall. Please leave your pet in your hotel room, or arrange to keep it in a crate in our front office. Persons under age 18 must have a release of liability signed by a parent or guardian, and they must also have a badge-wearing adult present for the duration of their participation. Any helpers or spouses must wear a badge to enter the show hall. We are very strict about our security for our showers' peace of mind. Anyone, of any age, who is rude, profane, aggressive, deemed a danger to other showers or property, or runs/jogs inside the show hall will be escorted from the show without refund. Running, rushing, or bumping is extremely irresponsible behavior in a room full of models. No smoking inside the hall, there is plenty of room outdoors for that.
